The Nippon Foundation is a private, non-profit foundation established in 1962 for the purpose of carrying out philanthropic activities, using revenue from motorboat racing in Japan. Today the Foundation supports humanitarian activities, both at home and abroad, and global maritime development. Its projects aim to improve public health and education, alleviate poverty, eliminate hunger and help the disabled.

Raitt Orr has worked with The Nippon Foundation on several of its global projects, notably the annual Global Appeal to End Stigma and Discrimination Against People Affected by Leprosy in 2008 and 2013, and maritime safety in the Straits of Malacca and Singapore. In September 2013 Raitt Orr organised the African Regional Symposium on “Leprosy and Human Rights: Principles and guidelines for the elimination of discrimination against persons affected by leprosy and their family members” in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Raitt Orr is in the process of planning the fifth and final Regional Symposium for Europe, which will be held in Geneva in June 2015.
